Something remarkable occurs after David’s victory over Goliath. Jonathan, whose place as prince regent has been lost by his father’s disobedience, gives loving loyalty to David, the man who has displaced him. In a stunning demonstration of humility, Jonathan places love for the Lord and his people above his own ambitions or desires, which unites his spirit to David’s. Sadly, however, Saul is going in the opposite direction, increasingly filled with jealous rage. Love for God’s king divides a family. The same still happens around Jesus.
