Jerusalem’s leading men – the Sanhedrin – want Jesus condemned to death, but the evidence is severely lacking. So the High Priest demands to know if he claims to be God’s Son. Yet the man will not name God in doing so. Why? Because he hates even the thought of who Jesus might be. Which, finally, brings a response from Jesus: you will now be condemned. The defendant has become the judge! Which triggers violent response from the council. Yet they can’t change the truth: Jesus is God’s Son and man appointed judge of all the earth. Everyone, high and low, will stand before him one day.
