Sermon Summary - Sunday 24 July 2022

Main Bible passage:  Mark 14:26-31

Jesus has his death on his mind because it’s so close now. But he’s also concerned for his disciples. They need to understand that he will be hit hard, like the shepherd of Zechariah 13. When that happens they will flee like frightened sheep. It will be a deeply distressing time which challenges their faith. But they can be confident in his return and must later meet him in Galilee. The disciples, however, are too proud of their strength. Peter tells Jesus that he knows better: he won’t run! So Jesus informs him that, in fact, he’ll be so scared he’ll deny he even knows him! When we are overconfident in ourselves, God may have to humble us.
