Jesus has silenced his opponents. But he will not be silent. Instead, he asks questions about the legal experts. Why do they struggle to see the most important commands? It’s not because they lack in intellect or knowledge. Their problem is moral. A proud obsession with status, along with a thieving greed, twists their understanding of Scripture and, so, of God. Jesus notes that a poor widow, sacrificially giving a tiny amount to the Lord, could teach them a thing or two about truly knowing God.
