Though his disciples know Jesus is God’s anointed king, they do not understand the implications. God’s kingdom is built by God’s power, not human strength. So Jesus must die, trusting his father to raise him. The disciples, however, cannot see how giving up everything can lead to victory. Neither can a man who now runs up to Jesus, ready to learn from him. He’s a good man with great wealth. But Jesus, with a few words, exposes the hidden sins of his heart and leaves the man in distress.
