Jesus’ disciples have failed to help a distressed family. So the father comes to Jesus himself. His son has been suffering all through his life with a serious condition which a malicious spirit is using to abuse the lad. Can Jesus do anything about it? He can. But Jesus also sees a teaching moment, where an important lesson about faith may be taught to his disciples and the surrounding crowd. A lesson in the weakness of humanity and our complete need of God’s strength. A truth which they will soon see in the most powerful way of all, in the fearful circumstances that are coming to the greatest Father and Son, when Jesus is crucified.
