Sermon Summary - Sunday 10 January 2021

Main Bible passage:  Mark 3:31-4:9

Jesus’ natural family considers him insane. Jesus’ legal family considers him wicked. But in a home in Galilee, he is surrounded by his new family formed from those who do the will of God, which means those committed to his Father’s plan for the kingdom. However, he knows he must ‘fish’ in the large crowds truly to discover who the members are of his new family. So he starts to teach in parables which stretch his hearers. In this way he will discern those who truly want to listen and know God, and those who are more lackadaisical. His first story about seeds does not have an initially clear meaning. But that’s done on purpose because Jesus knows it will draw out those who truly want to learn, who truly have ‘ears to hear’.
