Jesus replaces John as the public figure of God’s kingdom. His work begins in the north, in the borderlands where Israel has long suffered invasion from foreign powers due to her sinful rebellion against God. Jesus builds a team around him, starting with fishermen rather than the political and chattering classes of the south. His call causes these busy workmen to drop everything for Jesus has authority like no-one else. At a local religious centre, that comes through even more strikingly when he commands a spirit to leave a man in peace. Jesus transforms life.
