Sermon Summary - Sunday 22 December 2024

Main Bible passage:  Luke 1:46-55

“Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us.”

Those words begin a small book which is one of the most widely read books of history. We call it the “Gospel of Luke” where “gospel” means “good news”, and that is certainly what the author, Luke, delivers. In his book he tells the true story of Jesus and it opens with the events of the first Christmas, when Jesus was born. Then he goes on to tell of Jesus’s time as a public preacher, the violent execution he suffered and the remarkable miracle which followed and changed the world. The tale is powerful and wonderful, and it has transformed the lives of millions for the better: they have truly found it to be good news. Why? Because Jesus is unique. There has never been anyone like him and what he offers can be found nowhere else: a way to know God personally. We – all of us, no matter whether we are religious or not – have wandered far from the God who created us, far from the way he created us to live, and we do not know the way back. But Jesus can bring us back. Back to God. Back to life as it was meant to be.
