David’s attitude and thinking are being tested, to see if he is worthy to be the king God is calling him to be. One particular test comes when Saul falls into his hands. David’s men know what to do: strike for God has given this providence! But has he? Just because we have the opportunity do do something and, indeed, the desire to do something, that doesn’t make it right. David shows he understands that by not judging the king but leaving that with God. We need to live by similar thinking.
