Saul’s son Jonathan previously made a covenant with David which should protect him and see him installed as king (18:3-4). However, all the trouble with Saul has raised questions in David’s mind. Is the agreement still good? Is Jonathan still on his side? So the two friends meet and assure one another of their love. Then they agree to test Saul, so that Jonathan can see the truth of the situation. Covenants are valuable ways of securing relationships in our sinful, unreliable world. The best of all are, of course, the covenants God has made with us.
