There is tension in Judah about Saul. David has been anointed but what might come next? Saul himself is growing deranged. No longer helped by God’s Spirit, Saul suffers at the hands of another spirit who brings trouble upon him. David, however, does not exploit Saul’s pain. His humble heart leads him, instead, into the service of the king, to calm his times of mental distress with the therapy of music. Such gracious service reminds us of Jesus, who showed kindness and offered forgiveness to those who killed him. Christians should do likewise and love their enemies, always assured that our Saviour will bring about our well-being in the end.
