Three times in three chapters Saul has the opportunity to sacrifice in the way God desires; three times he fails. The first was when he panicked over Samuel’s lateness in chapter 13. Then when he caused dangerous havoc with a foolish vow in chapter 14. Now, here, he tops them both by disobeying God’s solemn command to bring justice upon a wicked tribe because he wants to enrich himself. This causes the Lord to grieve that he ever made him king. We must desire lives which bring our creator delight. The other way leads only to ruin.
