The picture of Saul has been quite negative in 1 Samuel. But that’s by no means the whole story of his reign and here the writer pauses to tell us more positive things about him. Saul fought hard for his people, tackled old enemies, produced a family, persevered and built a powerful team. Though he made serious mistakes and committed serious sins, he was not all bad. We have to take care when judging those who have done wrong, not to cast them only in a single light nor to forget the Lord’s call to forgiveness.
