Samuel leads Israel righteously. But he’s also a man of limitations, who can’t even raise his own sons to follow in his footsteps. However, Israel keeps failing to see how weak we are in our own flesh and how we must live by faith in the Lord. So Samuel makes his sons into judges (albeit at a distance!) to drive home the point. Yet his fellow Israelites do not learn the lesson but instead think their salvation lies in having a king like other nations. How foolish!. And how offensive to their God.
