Israel’s wilderness tabernacle – the tent where the ark of God was housed – is coming to the end of its life. That’s because it’s been horribly misused and, also, because God is moving his plans forward to centre on the king. But before the tabernacle is left empty of God, he comes to speak with Samuel first: a lad chosen to be, like Moses, a prophet in Israel. His first prophecy, however, is a hard one: the fall of the house of Eli. Yet Eli accepts it humbly, knowing the Lord is just. When times of change come, we must move forward with the Lord, repenting of sin and looking expectantly for what he will do next.
