God is the sovereign ruler over all the earth and over all its history. His work in history, however, follows repeated patterns. So by learning of what he’s done in the past we can better understand ourselves in the present. But that must be done always with Jesus in mind, for he is the ultimate demonstration of God at work, since he is God’s eternal Son. In Samuel we see God bringing a king graciously to save a stubbornly wicked people who are under his judgement. As we learn of that we better grasp what God has done through Christ.
