The disciples are shocked by Jesus’ insistence that he will soon be dead. This leaves their dream of a renewed Israel in the dust. But, says Jesus, that’s where it should be for even the finest things of this world come to an end, let alone those which have gone badly wrong like their ancient nation. But God has a greater plan. He is bringing about a reborn Israel which will last for ever: the kingdom of God. The road to it is a deadly one. But they must pick up their crosses and follow him for the destination is beautiful. Christians today must think the same way.
