With the first mission of the 12, Jesus’ kingdom has become much more visible. Indeed, it draws the attention of a godless local ruler: ‘King’ Herod Antipas. Already, this immoral and weak man has tangled with God’s kingdom when he had dealings with John the Baptist. Mark takes us back to that story in order to contrast Jesus’ greater kingdom with the wicked ways of the world. The tale, however, also warns any who follow Jesus that the path to final victory may require great sacrifices.
