Two stories twist into each other here. One is of the terminally ill young daughter of an important local official. The other of a woman in great need, hidden within the crowd. Jesus pauses from the former to heal the latter. This results in the young girl dying. But Jesus ignores the news, calling for the father to hold onto the faith he showed earlier. When they reach the house, he restores the girl to her family with only a few witnesses present – he won’t play to the crowd at all in this resurrection miracle. Jesus’ kingdom has to be built from those who truly trust him, not simply those who enjoy the exciting moments he creates.
